This paper presents the results obtained from analyzing 49 survey responses from HDD contractors in the United States and Canada. An industry survey was conducted in order to gain a better understanding of this multi-billion dollar industry, which is relatively unfamiliar to many in the construction sector. Applications of horizontal directional drilling span across the civil engineering spectrum from mineral and oil exploration to the installation of telecommunication lines. Currently, in North America alone, there are 17 manufacturers of HDD rigs and accessories and several hundred dedicated horizontal directional drilling contractors. Perhaps the fastest growing segment in the underground trenchless construction industry is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). Overall, the survey opens a window into the Horizontal Directional Drilling industry, providing valuable information regarding: technology capabilities limitations and applications characteristics of the industry and the outfits which provide the service and the risks and concerns that a contractor faces when performing HDD installations. As for consultants and owners, the information included in the report may prove invaluable as the statistics regarding productivity and installation costs can be used for obtaining budgetary figures and constructing preliminary schedules. Manufacturers can greatly benefit from the sections dealing with industry needs and typical problems encountered during directional drilling projects.
Additionally, contractors can learn from the collective experience of others when attempting to enter a new field such as environmental installations.
